10 Simple Steps to Reduce Your Impact on the Earth
Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb. If the vast majority of the world's scientists are right, we have just ten years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced.

Join the Stop Global Warming Virtual March
Global warming isn’t opinion. It’s a scientific reality. And the science tells us that human activity has made enormous impacts to our planet that affect our well-being and even our survival as a species.

The world’s leading science journals report that glaciers are melting ten times faster than previously thought, that atmospheric greenhouse gases have reached levels not seen for millions of years, and that species are vanishing as a result of climate change. They also report of extreme weather events, long-term droughts, and rising sea levels.

Fortunately, the science also tells us how we can begin to make significant repairs to try and reverse those impacts, but only through immediate action. That’s why we urge you to join us. The Stop Global Warming Virtual March is virtual but its purpose is real. By spreading the word and sharing this with others, our collective power will force governments, corporations, and politicians everywhere to pay attention.

Rainforest for Kids
My interest in wildlife and tropical rainforests began at an early age when my parents introduced me to nature books and magazines. I was fascinated by the pictures of strange animals living in distant lands and as I got older, my mother and father encouraged my learning by taking me on trips to other countries so I could see wildlife firsthand. I grew to greatly appreciate places of natural beauty and respect the environment around me.

Create Your Birth Plan
Writing a birth plan helps you to consider the many decisions you will make during your labor and postpartum time. It also educates you and your support people in options available.
Finally, a birth plan enables you to communicate your ideas and philosophy to your doctor, nurse midwife, the nursing staff and your support people.

The foundation of a birth plan comes from the woman who writes it. Confidence in your own abilities, freedom to draw strength from your spirituality, and physical and emotional support from those you gather around you will create the setting for the comfort strategies and medical options you choose.

Click "create your birthplan" at the bottom of the link page to get started.

Due Date Calculator
You're pregnant! To find out what your estimated due date is, enter the first day of your most recent menstrual cycle, and you will be able to follow your baby's development by using the information provided by NWHIC throughout your pregnancy. How your due date is calculated: Your due date is estimated by adding 40 weeks (280 days) to the approximate first day of your last menstrual period. Only 5% of women deliver their babies on their projected due date, so this date should be used as an estimate - it is not an exact calculation.

View >
Ovulation Calculator
If you would like to calculate the days when you are most likely to become pregnant, please enter the first day of your last period into the calculator. You are most likely to become pregnant if sexual activity occurs right before or after ovulation.

Your date of ovulation is calculated by subtracting 14 to 16 days from the date of your next period. This is an approximation and may not be exact for every woman. These calculations may not be accurate if your cycle is less than 21 days long or more than 35 days long, or if your menstrual cycle is irregular from month to month. Please consult your doctor for more detailed information.

In Search of an Icon: Breastfeeding Symbol Contest
The image of a baby bottle announcing the location of a "parents lounge" in an airport got us thinking: Is there an international symbol for breastfeeding? Similar to the familiar icons we've all seen indicating a handicapped parking spot or the women's restroom, this image would be a recognizable symbol indicating that a place is breastfeeding friendly. Ideally, the space would be private, quiet, with a comfortable chair and an electrical outlet for pumping.

101 Reasons to Breastfeed Your Child
This link has 101 Reasons to Breastfeed. Here is Reason #1:

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding
According to the AAP, "Human milk is species-specific, and all substitute feeding preparations differ markedly from it, making human milk uniquely superior for infant feeding. Exclusive breastfeeding is the reference or normative model against which all alternative feeding methods must be measured with regard to growth, health, development, and all other short- and long-term outcomes. In addition, human milk-fed premature infants receive significant benefits with respect to host protection and improved developmental outcomes compared with formula-fed premature infants… Pediatricians and parents should be aware that exclusive breastfeeding is sufficient to support optimal growth and development for approximately the first 6 months of life and provides continuing protection against diarrhea and respiratory tract infection. Breastfeeding should be continued for at least the first year of life and beyond for as long as mutually desired by mother and child."

10 Things Expectant Parents Need to Know
Here is #1. You will find the other 9 things expectant parents need to know about breastfeeding when you link to the site:

1. Breastfeeding is an important health issue. Hundreds of medical studies have been done on the differing health consequences of breastfeeding and formula-feeding.
The results are unanimous: every study shows significantly greater instances of illness among artificially-fed babies, even where clean water, adequate supplies of formula and modern medical care are available. Some of these illnesses are minor and easily curable and some of them are extremely rare regardless of feeding method. Some of them are fairly common and fairly serious (gastroenteritis and pneumonia, among them). And the impact appears to be life-long: several studies have shown a significant influence on adult illness rates (e.g., both pre-and post-menopausal breast cancer are 25% less common among the population of adult women who were breastfed as infants) .

"I could also never tell which side to begin with, even though a lot of my friends just knew by feel."

Walking to Reduce the Risk of Cancer
Moderate physical activity may reduce the risk of breast cancer by as much as 33% in some women! This was one of the findings in a study presented at the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program on September 6th 2002. Dr. Esther M. John, an epidemiologist at the Northern California Cancer Center in Union City, California also reported that “this study also points out two important factors: it is total physical activity over the course of a lifetime that confers a benefit, and this activity is not limited to vigorous exercise. Even moderate activity has real benefits.” Dr. John and her colleagues based their findings on detailed interviews with premenopausal and postmenopausal women, with cancer, between the ages of 35 and 79, which assessed total physical activity throughout the duration of their lives.

*Visit La Conner & Childhood Bliss!
La Conner, founded in the 1880's, is a community listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It can be accessed by land or sea (via Interstate 5 or the Swinomish Channel) and is home to many unique shops and art galleries; art, history, and quilt museums; fine dining, and award-winning accommodations. Visitors and locals alike enjoy the sculpture walk through town. Winter brings migrating birds, spring blossoms with daffodil and tulip fields, and summer welcomes boating and other outdoor recreational activities. La Conner is about one hour north of Seattle, one hour south of Vancouver BC, and 25 minutes to the San Juan Island Ferries. Finally and most importantly, La Conner is the home of the Childhood Bliss Storefront & CB Studio!
